Costly Victory

Waging the most expensive and contentious re-election campaign in Florida this year, state Sen. Alex Villalobos, R-Miami, defeated school board member Frank Bolaños in a Republican primary. Villalobos has no opponent in the general election. Once in line to serve as Senate president, Villalobos earned the ire of Gov. Jeb Bush for opposing the governor on tuition vouchers and on a plan to revamp the state's class-cap law. Third-party groups spent nearly $6 million in ads attacking Villalobos.
